8.19.25 - lord, increase my confidence
Hi ,
I've shared with you in a previous message that I'm reading through the Old Testament with my Tik Tok community and Facebook group. Right now we are reading through 1 Samuel and today we read the story of David and Goliath. I want to share a piece of Chapter 17:
34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, 35 I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. 36 Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. 37 The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”
This confidence in David inspired me. David was not ashamed to look crazy for God. He told Saul exactly what God would do, and did not hesitate. I can't imagine ever taking down a lion or bear, or going to war to fight 1:1 with a giant. David knew the power of God and declared it aloud. My mind wonders whether Saul trusted David's words, or if he was so scared he was willing to accept help from even a youth like David. Based on chapter 16, versus 14, I believe it's the latter - 14 Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him.
Saul had experienced the Lord being with him to defeat the Ammonites but how quickly he fell away.
Later in Chapter 17 we read David declare in advance his victory to Goliath before the battle began.
45 David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. 47 All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”
I admire David's crazy confidence in the Lord. I desire to have this level of confidence. I find myself trusting in the Lord, but then wondering, will he actually do this? And If he will, when?
I had to humble myself this morning and ask the Lord to increase my confidence. I want to have confidence like David, but sometimes I feel defeated.
I hope if you are in a place like me, that you will ask the Lord to increase your confidence too! He can do all things.
I appreciate you being part of this community—it's always more than skin care. 💛
