8.6.25 - Self control (do you have it?)

Hi ,

Self control is one of the fruits of the Spirit.

Paul writes in Galatians 5:16 "But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh." In verse 17 Paul continues, "For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do."

Here we learn that as believers our flesh is in battle with the Holy Spirit. As Christians, we struggle to walk by the Spirit because our flesh has sinful desires. So right off bat - we have to accept this is not a walk in the park.

Galatians 5 goes on to tell us about the works of the flesh, but then we learn the fruits of the Spirit. The fruits of the Spirit are attributes of God and how Jesus represented himself in the Gospels. As we follow Christ, these fruits should begin to be produced in our life and recognized by others.

A few months ago I realized through parenting that I was struggling with self control. It's easy to practice self control when things are running smoothly. It's when things get rough, self control takes a back seat. It wasn't okay with me that I had self control in moments of order, but in moments of frustration, I would just start going off.

I would start yelling at the kids. I would just keep going and going so that they knew how unacceptable their behavior was. This left me feeling more frustrated and really wasn't teaching the kids how to respond when they became frustrated.

(It's really ironic how much our kids teach us about ourselves.)

I had to pray and ask God to help me because I didn't know how I was supposed to have any self control after repeating myself 3-4 times. But... God has been helping me, and I've been able to recognize areas where I need self control the most.

I wanted to share this with you because yesterday, after I was on Tik tok, I noticed how little self control people have. It's honestly scary.

Whether you need self control with your spending, your words, your health, or in your parenting - there is good news.

We can bear these fruits through the power of the Holy Spirit. I encourage you to read through Galatians this week and ask God which fruit you can bear more in your life?

I appreciate you being part of this community—it's always more than skin care. 💛
